The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and Europe.
