Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
